I used the following unit overview provided by the district to design and implement writing lessons for a unit on fairy tale writing. Students created adaptations of traditional stories first. Then students were able to use the skills and strategies they learned to create a cumulative writing piece as the students wrote their very own original fairy tales.
This is a 5th grade social studies unit I developed in collaboration with a team of colleagues. This unit has a focus on Indigenous people's cultures throughout history. The unit includes a number of cross-cutting, multi-cultural and social justice lessons.
The students will be participating in three learning activities at the Discovery Museum. First the museum's instructor will teach students about chemical changes, physical changes and properties of matter.
Next students will participate in a exploration of chemical change as they create baking soda volcanoes. The final activity involves students working with different chemicals to create slime. The students also will have to learn what the mystery ingredient does.
Students will participate in three learning activities. The first presents students with a number of artifacts from Fairfield CT's past. A speaker will provide information about the importance of these artifacts.
Next students will participate in a scavenger hunt activity prepared by the museum. The students will be challenged to search in small groups for their answers by reading the information in the exhibits.
Finally the students will learn the history and also about the process of creating corn husk dolls. Then students will have workshop time to create and dress their own corn husk dolls that they will keep.
